The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?
-Psalm 24:1 (NLT)
The poetic voice of David resounds as he declares his protection and safety and by Whom these qualities come from.
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest
in the shadow of the Almighty. -Psalm 91:1 (NLT)
There are four things in this short text that David wanted his readers to grasp and declare!
1. The Lord is light.
The Lord is the source of light. He guides us with his light on the path through darkness, distress, trouble, perplexity, and sorrow.
No matter what you are going through, God will light your path and help you through some of the most difficult times in your life.
We are not exempt of distress, trouble, perplexity, and sorrow, but the Lord has promised that He will walk through them with us.
What does that look like?
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord Forever.
- Psalm 23 (NKJV)
Ever been in a situation where it was so dark that you could not make out anything in front of you?
In this kind of darkness, just one light the size of a straight pin; so small that one could barely see normally, in complete darkness the small pin-light would illuminate the entire area.
The light of Christ will dispel any darkness in your life.
The Second thing in this short text that David wanted his readers to grasp and declare!
2. The Lord is Salvation.
The Lord will save and deliver YOU!
“I will rejoice in the God of my salvation”
- Habakkuk (NASB)
The third thing in this short text that David wanted his readers to grasp and declare!
3. Why should we be afraid?
God is on our side; there is no reason to be fearful!
For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT)
There is a difference in being careful and fearful.
Many worry about things that they do not have control over. God is fully able to protect you and you can trust Him.
He has told us,
“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.”
Philippians 4:6 (NLT)
The fourth thing in this short text that David wanted his readers to grasp and declare!
4. The Lord is our strength.
He is our strength. He is our support. He keeps me alive.
“As long as God is its strength, there is nothing to fear.”
- Barnes Commentary
- Our Light
- Our Salvation
- Our Strength……. Why should we be afraid!
He’s got YOU!
“Lord, You are our light that lights our path. You know our every step. You direct the steps of the righteous.
Thank You for Your salvation that protects us. Help us to be fearless. Let us know that You are near.
Lead us and guide us and protect us. Help us understand Your strength. We need it!
Thank you for what you are doing and going to do in our lives.
We praise You and thank You in Your Strong and Mighty Son Jesus Christ, Amen."
