God's Character

The LORD passed in front of Moses, calling out, “Yahweh! The LORD! The
God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing
love and faithfulness. Genesis 34:6 (NLT)

In this passage, Moses had gone back to the mountain, Mt Sinai, and
God gave him the second copy of the Ten Commandments.

Moses had smashed the first copy because of his anger toward the
people of Israel who had sinned against God.

God passed in front of Moses and called out His own name…. Yahweh
(YHWH) “Jehovah” “The Lord.” God had put his hand over Moses’
face while He passed. Moses was only allowed to see the back of
God: he only got a glimpse of Him.

Just one glimpse of any part of God will change your life forever!

I’ve heard people say, “God wouldn’t do that!” or “God doesn’t change His
mind!” How about this one? “God would not let this happen to me!”

How do we really know God’s character and what He would do?

  • The WORD!

Five Characteristics of God

1. Compassion.

We see in the Old Testament, many instances, where God showed the
people compassion; He spared lives by the thousands.

David writes a Psalm…..

The LORD is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those
who fear him. Psalm 103:13 (NLT)

We can see God’s Compassion by examining the Gift He gave to
humanity, Jesus Christ.

Compassion -
a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by
misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

Humanities misfortune was a life that would lead to eternal death. God
alleviated the problem……He had Compassion on us and gave us the
opportunity to receive eternal Life instead of Death!

God sees you when you are in pain. God knows when you are in need of
relief from issues in your life.

God knows when you are hurting and He has compassion for you!

2. Mercy.

But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even
though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised
Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NLT)

Because of God’s mercy…..we can go to Him with confidence knowing that
He will help us in times of need.

So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will
receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.
Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

Mercy is the stuff you give people that don't deserve it. - Joyce Meyer

3. Faithfulness.

You can count on God to be faithful.
No matter what you are facing, God will show up in your circumstance.
Even when we are unfaithful, God does not say, “Well, I will only be faithful
if you are faithful.” Nope, that is not God!

If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is.
2 Timothy 2:13 (NLT)

4. Justice.

I’ve heard people say, “God would not do that!
Well, the Bible says He did!

Now, I understand that there are things that God will not do now that Christ
has paid the price to free us……

I thank God He sent Christ to free us! Thank you God for Grace!

However, Grace was not given so we can be empowered to do what is
wrong with no consequences!

Grace was given to empower us to be free from doing what is wrong! God is a God of Justice as much as He is a God of grace and mercy.

Justice is a joy to the godly, but it terrifies evildoers. Proverbs 21:15 (NLT)

God’s justice is to protect His people.
Just as a person who touches a hot fire. The justice is the heat that causes
the person to jerk their hand back. The heat is what protects the person
from getting severely burned.

God's justice causes a person to step back from that
which will cause him to be burned.

Sin cannot contaminate the presence of God.

5. Unfailing Love.

But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:8

If a person still has a problem believing that God loves him…….
This passage says it all!

For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so
that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NLT)

God's love was so great that He sent His Son for everyone; not just a few!

God sent His Son for YOU!
Now, you can experience Him!
You can experience His:

  • Compassion
  • Mercy
  • Faithfulness
  • Justice
  • Unfailing Love

Prayer

“God, I do believe that You love us more than we could ever imagine. I believe that the reason we can love is because You first loved.
God, I pray that everyone hearing this or reading this today will come to
understand Your characteristics and how You chase after us.
Help us understand. Help us stay focused on what You say about us and not
what others say.
God, if you said it, we should not have an opinion!
Thank you for Your compassion, mercy, faithfulness, justice, and Your unfailing love. We love You! Amen"
